This quote, continued from page 49, is taken from the second chapter of Joshua, verse 21. In this section, a woman named Rahab chose to protect two of Joshua’s spies in return for Joshua’s forces to spare her and her family upon their return to her city. She tied a scarlet cord in her window as a way of marking her house as apart from the impending destruction and therefore protecting her family. Similarly, Woods and his fellow Unionists saw their Union Leagues as setting themselves apart from the South and deserving of protection from the Union following the war.
