Lewis T. Woodruff enlisted in Company K of the 3rd Alabama Infantry in May of 1861 where he stayed until he was elected Lieutenant Colonel of the 36th Alabama on May 12, 1862, then promoted to Colonel March 11, 1863. He was promoted once again to Brigadier General after Woods’ imprisonment and was wounded through the thigh which led to his discharge in December of 1864.
