John Gill Shorter (also known as Johnathan Gill Shorter) was governor of Alabama from 1861-1863. Despite his initial opposition to secession, he was elected on a pro-slavery and limited government ticket. As the necessities of war hit the state, he was forced to increase the role of government, a move which eventually led to his loss of the 1863 election.'>Jno. Gill Shorter were nearly good as gold.
