Memoir 2, Page 83, The Battle-House

"The depot, wharf, Battle-House, and Dauphin and St Michael Sts. were all in sight."

The Battle-House started out as a military fort and military headquarters of Andrew Jackson during the War of 1812. This site became the new home of the Battle House Hotel, opened in 1852 by John and Samuel Battle. Despite burning twice, this hotel still stands and has housed a wide range of visitors, including Jefferson Davis, Oscar Wilde, and Woodrow Wilson. Although fairly thorough, Woods’ description of this area does not allow for an exact pinpointing of what building he may have been held in; however, we can see the general area that he describes.
